What lip filler migration looks like
Migrated filler usually shows above the upper lip.
Instead of a clean border between the pink lip and the skin, you see a soft, puffy area sitting just above the lip line. From the front, the lip may look larger. From the side, it often looks flatter and more projected in the wrong place.
Some patients describe it as a “moustache” of swelling. Others notice their cupid’s bow has disappeared, or their top lip has started to look smooth and shapeless.

It is usually painless. It is not usually dangerous. But aesthetically, it changes the whole lip. And once you know what you are looking for, you cannot unsee it.
Why lip filler migrates
Lip filler migration usually comes down to three things.
- Too much product.
- Product placed in the wrong layer.
- Repeated top-ups before the old filler has broken down.
The lip has a natural capacity. It is not an empty space waiting to be filled. Once you push past what that lip can hold, the filler has to go somewhere. Most of the time, it moves upwards into the softer tissue above the lip.
Placement matters too. If filler is placed too superficially, or too close to the border, it can sit where it should not. Even a small amount can look wrong if it is in the wrong place.
Then there is the top-up problem.
A patient comes in wanting “just a little more”. Then another little bit a few months later. Then another. Nobody stops to ask how much filler is still there. Nobody reassesses the lip properly. Eventually, the shape is lost.
The filler itself is rarely the issue. Good filler can look poor if it is placed badly. Good filler can also migrate if too much is used.
A real example from clinic
A patient came to Skinfinity after having lip filler elsewhere over several appointments.
She did not want “big lips”. That is the important part. She had never asked for an extreme result. She had just kept having small top-ups because the lip still did not look quite right.
By the time I saw her, the volume was sitting above the lip rather than in the lip. The border had gone. From the front, her lips looked full. From the side, the filler looked like a ledge.
We dissolved the migrated filler first. Then we waited for the tissue to settle before refilling with a smaller amount in the correct place.
The result was not a bigger lip. It was a cleaner lip.
That is what most correction work is really about.
How to avoid lip filler migration
Have less filler than you think you want. That is the honest answer.
At Skinfinity, most first-time lip filler patients start with 0.5ml. That is usually enough to define the border, support the shape, and add subtle volume without overloading the lip.

I would rather a patient come back for a small top-up than leave with more filler than their lip can hold.
Before I inject, I look at the lips at rest. I look at them when the patient talks. I look at them when they smile. Lips move constantly, so the treatment has to work in motion, not just in a still photograph taken straight after treatment.
If you have had lip filler before, anywhere else, please tell me at your consultation. That applies even if:
- you are not sure how much was used
- it was a few years ago
- you think it has completely dissolved
And sometimes the right answer is not more filler. It is dissolving first and starting again properly.
Can lip filler migration be fixed?
Yes, if the filler is hyaluronic acid filler. Migrated hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved using an enzyme called hyaluronidase. This is injected into the affected area by an appropriately trained prescriber.
The filler then breaks down over the following days. Once the lip has settled, usually after two to four weeks, it can be refilled if that is still what the patient wants.
But the second treatment should not repeat the first mistake:
- Less product.
- Better placement.
- A proper assessment of the lip before anything goes back in.
That is the difference.
Filler that is not hyaluronic acid cannot be dissolved this way. This is one of the reasons I only use hyaluronic acid filler in lips.
Does migrated filler go away on its own?
Sometimes. Slowly.
Hyaluronic acid filler breaks down over time, but migrated filler can linger because the tissue above the lip does not move in the same way as the lip itself.
If the migration is very mild and it does not bother you, waiting can be reasonable, however if the shelf is obvious, or if you want more filler in the lip, dissolving first is usually the cleaner route. Adding more filler on top of migration usually makes the problem worse.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my lip filler has migrated?
Look at your top lip from the side. If there is a soft ridge or cushion above the lip line, and the border between the lip and the skin looks blurred, that may be migration. Compare it with a photograph of your lips before filler. If you are not sure, book an assessment with a prescriber.
Can lip filler migrate months later?
Yes. Migration can become obvious weeks or months after treatment, especially if the filler was placed superficially or more filler has been added on top. It does not always mean the product itself was faulty.
Does massage help lip filler migration?
No. Massage will not push migrated filler neatly back into the lip. It may make the area more irritated or spread the product further. Leave it alone and see a prescriber.
How much does it cost to dissolve lip filler in Leeds?
Dissolving is priced at consultation because the amount needed depends on how much filler is present and where it is sitting. The consultation at Skinfinity is £50. Once the lip has settled, refilling is from £200 for 0.5ml.
Will dissolving my lips leave them looking worse?
Not once everything has settled. Dissolving removes the filler and allows the lip to return closer to its natural state. Lips can look a little flat or swollen for a few days while things settle. Some patients are also surprised by how their natural lip looks after years of filler, but that is not the same as damage.
Can I have lip filler again after migration?
Yes, once the migrated filler has been dissolved and the lip has settled. This is usually after two to four weeks. The next treatment should be planned carefully, with a smaller amount placed in the right area.
Worried your lip filler has migrated?
If you think your filler has moved, do not keep adding more.
I will assess what is there, explain whether it needs dissolving, and tell you honestly if more filler is the wrong answer. Sometimes we can refine the lip. Sometimes we need to reset it first.
