Surgical Birthmark Removal
Skinfinity Clinic, based at Thorpe Park in Leeds are experts in minor surgery and cosmetic surgery. Our expert team have performed a high number of surgical birthmark removal procedures so you're in safe hands.
What are birthmarks:
There are several different types of birthmarks, although there are two most common types: vascular or pigmented.
Vascular birthmarks are red or purple in appearance and are easily removed with surgery, and are most commonly removed for cosmetic reasons.
Pigmented birthmarks are caused by an overgrowth of the cells that generate colour in our skin, similar to how moles are formed.
Can birthmarks be removed:
Birthmarks are normally easily removed by surgery, and surgeries for small ones is performed in one session, avoiding the need for multiple appointments.
For larger lesions, multiple excisions may be required, and we can graft skin from other areas to cover the wound.
What happens during a surgical birthmark removal:
During surgical tattoo removal, our consultant plastic surgeon will totally numb the treatment area with local anaesthetic, meaning that you won't feel any pain during the procedure.
A scalpel is used to cut around the circumference of the birthmark and the wound is closed with sutures to leave just a fine line in the place of the mark.
The time taken to surgically remove a birthmark is 20-30 minutes, and you will be able to return home shortly after your procedure.
Following the surgery, we will require you to attend a follow up with our team one week after the procedure to change your dressing and perform a post op check up to ensure everything is settling down.
